According to US President Barack Obama, Orlando Shooter Omar S. Mateen was a “homegrown” terrorist.
Mateen, who killed 49 people and injured 53 others in an Orlando gay nightclub, was detained. Investigation showed he purchased a gun legally. Inspired by extremist information all over the Internet and holding strong belief in these, he declared his allegiance to the Islamic State after he gunned down many of the Orlando club’s regulars.
Mr Obama said “Countering this extremist ideology is increasingly going to be just as important as making sure that we are disrupting more extensive plots engineered from the outside.”
Mr Obama urged people to consider how to respond to the attacks and avoid an “either/or” debate about terrorism or gun control and instead focus on addressing both.
FBI Director James Comey said there is no indication of the suspect’s true motives. He said what is only certain is the radicalisation present in Matten during his assault is inspired by terrorist organisations worldwide.
According to clubgoer and survivor Ty Smith, Omar Mateen was a regular at the nightclub.
“Sometimes he would go over in the corner and sit and drink by himself, and other times he would get so drunk he was loud and belligerent.”
“We didn’t really talk to him a lot, but I remember him saying things about his dad at times. He told us he had a wife and child.”
Another club regular Kevin West said that Mateen messaged him using a gay chat app. Other said he had used more than one gay chat application to find mutual acquaintances to hook up with.
